Bluegill, Crappie and Redears or Shell Crackers

by Jody Narantic on April 29, 2009

During our 9 day vacation trip, we were able to catch about 700 fish. Mostly bluegill, 1 or 2 crappie a day, a few redears or shell crackers and a couple of catfish.

700 fish sounds like a lot and it is. I tell you there were a lot of anglers fishing the week we were there and no one was at the fish cleaning stations. I’m amazed at how some anglers aren’t able to catch fish. Some were fishing for bass, which they catch and release. Some were there for strictly crappie and others were there for any panfish they could get. Like us. Yet my husband and our friend Troy were the only ones really cleaning fish last week. I will go into more detail about this next week. Possibly a lesson from me.

This is a redear or shell cracker. Looks like a very large bluegill. You can get some good meat off a redear.

This is another redear and a crappie. Both measured about 14 inches.

And we caught some pretty big bluegill. Mostly 6-8 inches.

So you ask who cut up all those fish? My silly little readers, who do you think?

That is awesome that you caught that many fish, but I have to be honest and tell you that I HATE cleaning fish. I’ll do it about once a year so that we can have a fish fry, but normally it’s catch and release for me.

Those are some huge ‘gills and crappie, though. Very nice!

I don’t mind but 700 is about 690 to many. Nice fish though.

Sounds like you had a good time.

Cleaning fish is not high on my list but, someone has to do it and I know my wife is not one of them.

I don’t think there is any guessing invoved here. Is Mark suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome yet?

Sounds like an excellent trip. You look much happier when you are dry and comfortable. I love the way you are holding the line/hook in that bottom picture. It screams eeewwwww!
