Boone & Crockett Pope & Young

by Jody on March 26, 2009

Clueless non-hunting broad = The Hunter’s Wife.  Yes, that’s me.  It all started at Cabelas with their Boone & Crocket, Pope & Young and Hoosiers (Indiana) Bucks scoring event.  I was there supporting my husband and his deer mount as it was getting scored by Dawn and Bob to see if his mount made the record books.

While yawning, stretching and not really paying attention, my husband and Dawn were deep in conversation about what they hunt, where and with what.  Not wanting to be such a bore I thought I know enough about hunting to contribute something to the conversation.

Mark mention where he hunts it’s pretty thick and a shot at 30 yards is pretty difficult.   Dawn replied that she knows how that goes.  Most of her shots are always about 7 yards.  How hard is that to understand?  So I looked at Dawn and said, “Oh, because of trees and stuff – it’s too thick out there?”  Dawn looked up at me and replied, “Umm nah.  Not really.”  And went about her measuring.   So I leaned in to Mark and whispered, “Well what does that mean?”  Not wanting to let Dawn hear me, he waved me off.

While I tried to figure out how I misunderstood, they continued their conversation.  They were laughing, giggling and probably using hunting terms on purpose so I wouldn’t know what they were talking about.  For the love of my hot flasing “29″ year old memory, I can’t remember what was said next but I again opened my clueless non-hunting mouth and Dawns reply was, “Umm no.  Not really.”   I leaned into my husband and replied, “Huh? Are you almost done. I’m hungry.”

So I sat and ignored the browning, red head, and diamond know-it-alls.

My mind wondered off to … Hmm, if I actually shopped here I would go buy myself something.  Wonder if they have any warm pecans made yet?  Maybe I’ll head down to the fishing section and buy myself a cute little bug thingy to go on my fishing pole even if it is for catching sharks.  I love those cute lil lures and my hunter always tells me no those aren’t for crappie those are for blah blah blah.

Thank goodness, the scoring was over.

And the final numbers for you hunting fans that actually pay attention:

He made the books with 155 2/8.

P.S. – Dawn and Bob were actually a very nice couple that knew a lot about hunting.   And they sure were busy both Saturday and Sunday.  My hunter returned on Sunday with another buck and so did his brother.  I can’t wait to follow-up with those stories next week.

Have a good day all.

Measuring antlers is something that I have wanted to try for some time and maybe one of these days I will. Nice post and tell your husband that 155 2/8 is a very respectable buck.

How rude of her to be so dismissive to The Hunter’s Wife! For the love of being ignored! You should have pulled some smack-talk with a couple of your highly technical fishing terms. Now THAT would have impressed her. :)

Ummmm, what the heck was she talking about then? I don’t know either. I thought you would post that for us “non hunters”. lol

Awesome buck- only place I’ve seen that kind of buck is in my dreams.

I’m with you on not following the hunting talk either.

I would have gone for the warm pecans.

155 you say. I would kill for a buck like that. What a lucky guy.
