Jody,
My wife is from Southern California, and had never hunted a day in her life until she met me. Heck, she had never even "hiked" in the woods. However we were able to change that in no time, and now she is an expert outdoorswoman.
Granted, the first time I went to pick her up from the stand, she jumped down and exclaimed that I had left her out there in the dark with the bears. But after I calmly explained that we always hunted until dark and that there were NO bears, she has been fine ever since!
As for the snakes, I always wear snake boots. But that is as much for the briers as anything else. You just have to know that snakes live in the woods and respect it. It is the same when I surf. There are sharks in the ocean, but they ALMOST never bother you.
So just get yourself some nice snake boots, tuck your pants in them (that will keep the ticks and spiders out) and get outside to look for those sheds.
However you may want to flip a coin on Adam's idea of walking behind Mark. Having him bump the snakes out of the way sometimes works. However occasionally the person in front gets the snake's attention, and it then bites the next person in line...
Happy shed hunting :)

The more you experience the timber those little creepy crawlies will become less of an issue. Wearing boots and jeans are important to me. ;)

My dad and a friend just went shed hunting last weekend and they found a real nice shed. I haven't been yet, but hope to soon. Don't worry about the snakes just let your husband walk in front of you, that way if theres a snake he will step on it. I wear snake chaps when I do a lot of walking, you can get them fairly cheap.

Arthur, we will see how much fun I have.

Steve, I will be sure to send you pictures to put on your Shed Antler site.

Marc, for all the trouble I will be going thru I hope to find some.

Marky, I had never heard of Geo-caching and just searched the internet. I can't believe I've never heard of that before.

I only go with my hubby when there are NO snakes..so basically in the winter months only. We also go Geo-caching with the kids a lot, but I only participate when the slithery things are hibernating!

I didn't find any sheds on my first shed hunt last week, but I did see a ton of deer and some turkeys. I don't think you'll have to worry about snakes and coyotes too much. I usually only run into snakes during the summer when I go into swampy lowland areas, but this is in NY so I don't know what it's like near you guys. Anyway, have fun!

Shed hunting is so much fun and when you find that first shed you will be hooked. I think the only thing you will have to worry about is fighting the rodents for the shed. (Just kidding Jody)
