Non-Hunters Discussing Hunting/Fishing

by Jody Narantic on March 9, 2009

It’s not that often that non-hunters are discussing hunting so when I recently came across an article from a frugal blog, Wise Bread, asking is  hunting/fishing a good way to feed your family I thought I’d share it here.

The article is from December but what I found interesting is what Andrea Dickson stated about hunters-

Even as something of an animal rights proponent, I’ve never had anything against hunting. In fact, I consider hunting one of the more honest activities one can engage in. It’s one thing to get your sterile, packaged meat from the supermarket – it’s an entirely different matter to track, kill, and butcher the animal whose flesh you consume. Those of us who never face the living animals that we eat can keep a safe distance from their life, death, suffering, and realness. Hunters don’t have that luxury.

If you get a chance, please read the article. You will be surprised to see some of the comments of non-hunters supporting hunting, considering taking up hunting and even bartering for the meat.

Very interesting post! I’m glad you found it and decided to share. I too was suprised at the open-mindedness of the readers who left comments. It seems the economic downturn is hitting hard – especially in the area of the grocery budget. Even tho the article is from December, I left my two-cents.

Great find and I am also surprised at the open mindedness of the non hunters. Several raised the same point at the difficulty of seeing eye to eye the animal you’re about to kill, and not being able to do so. Yes it is difficult for us hunters as well. We do have hearts and whenever anyone decides to stop a beating heart, I hope they are affected!

Wow, that seemed pretty balanced. I’m surprised, but pleased to see a discussion that open.

Guess there are more people who understand hunting out there than we know.

I remember that article from when it first ran – thanks for highlighting it. I’ll have to go back and read it again.

Thanks for the link – interesting and even a bit reassuring.

I’m sorry I never learned how to hunt and dress game even though my dad was (and is) still a big hunter. I think we’re going to see more and more people learning these skills out of necessity.

I too saw this article when it first ran, but it did give me some hope about our hunting future. I thought it was very balanced, and really appealed to an audience that most of us forget about; those people who are on the fence about hunting.

Thanks for pointing it out again.

Thanks for the link! Sorry I’m so late in seeing it – I’ve been so busy with my day job that I’ve been neglecting my blogging. Anyway, glad you all liked it, and thanks for the kind words!
