Outdoors With Dan Small

by Jody Narantic on September 15, 2009

Outdoors with Dan SmallYesterday I had my first outdoor radio interview with Outdoors With Dan Small and Jeff Kelm. I’ve never done a radio interview before for The Hunter’s Wife. I’m not one that likes talking about myself in a serious manner. My blog is about humor and I make fun of myself on a daily basis. So let’s just say I was a bit nervous.

To prepare myself, I listened to a few past shows and did a little reading at Dan Small’s blog – Blog The Road. I also made notes of a few things I wanted to mention.  But somehow things went in several different directions…

Instead of saying something like, “I find humor with…”
I said, “I make fun of my husband.”

That sounded professional didn’t it? On the radio, with outdoor listeners, that have no clue who The Hunter’s Wife is and I mention how I make fun of my husband and his outdoor ways. Great! That is a sure why to get their listeners to my blog.

It didn’t end there…

I can’t remember what was asked but at some point my babbling lead to, “It’s not just about the killing.” Oh deer. What? I’ve been reading too many serious outdoor blogs.  I don’t talk about those things.  Couldn’t they have asked me about my recent outdoor photo shoot or what happen to my duck eggs or what if I ever were to go hunting?

I’m wondering if we can erase that part of the interview?

Oh and it didn’t end there…

I also mentioned I would link to Dan’s blog if he would write more.  There I go again telling another man what to do on live radio.

All in all it was in good fun and they seem like great guys.  Maybe sometime soon they will ask me back and say something like, “What would you like to talk about?  We heard you have a new pink fishing pole that matches your nail polish.”

Have a wonderful day all…I’m off to pull my foot out of my mouth and hire a spokesperson.

You are becoming quite the famous gal =) Congrats on the show.. to even be asked to that is an honor. I bet you sounded just fine. Did you mention cupcakes at all though? ;)

I think I need a spokesperson too. It will make me feel all professional and stuff. I think I’m going to have to listen to that interview.

I know how you feel. When I started writing, I was asked to be a guest co-host for a sports radio show in Nashville, TN. First of all, the show went on air at 5am!!! I hunt, but let me tell you, my brain has not yet had a meeting with my mouth at that time of the morning and nothing that I had planned to talk about was actually discussed. The majority of the show was about fishing and I’m clueless when it comes to fishing. Oh, I like to go, but give me a worm and I’m good. I’m sure you did great on the interview!! :)

I’m sure you were fine Jody :)

You are becoming quite famous… can you send me your autograph so that when you get really, really famous I’ll already have it? Seriously though – congratulations on your first radio interview! Even if things didn’t go exactly like you had hoped they would I’m sure you did just fine.

Is there a podcast of the interview? I’m sure it went awesome. I once did an interview for a station in Kansas and the whole rest of the day I found myself analyzing and reanalyzing everything I said.

Congrats! And I have yet to have a radio interview that’s gone the way I planned it. Therefore, I stopped planning for them and keep just 2 points in my head I want to get across – like where to see the network, or a show to promote. Otherwise, I just stumble over my words and can totally hear the listeners saying “Who is this idiot representing Sportsman Channel?” Well, they probably don’t say that…but I create a lot of anxiety for myself.

Radio interviews are fun, but you always ramble. I did one with Tom Remington that went on for about an hour and a half. Plus you don’t want to plan things out too much, or you don’t sound real.

I’m sure you did fine and I’d love to to hear the interview. Is there a link?

Jody .. I just had to laugh at your comments on the interview w/ Dan and Jeff (Dan Small Outdoors Radio) !! You’re a hoot!

You may – or may not – remember me (O’fieldstream) form the early days when you began blogging we became early friends on the BlogCatalog and then members of the Outdoor Blogging Summit group.

Well, here we go, connecting again! I do all of Dan Small’s ‘tech-work’ .. or as he calls me – his ‘web guru’. Well, it may be more like ‘ooey-gooey’ but none-the-less, you may have succeeded in getting him to do what I’ve not been able to do in the 6 years since I got him into blogging: write to his blog – REGULARLY. “. )))

You Go Jody!

I can’t throw too many rocks as I’m so busy building and keeping up w/the technology that I seem to write more emails, blog and forum comments and tutorials… and not enough blog posts!

I’m just tickled that Dan put you on the show. I’ve not heard the ‘show’ yet, but I know that Dan and Jeff both really enjoyed your segment and can tell you for a fact, you’d be more than welcome anytime to do another show. And DEFINITELY .. tell them about your outdoor photos, your ducklings, and by all means .. your cupcakes! “. )

In fact I’m listening now … and will let you know ….

Keep the posts a rollin’ !!

ofieldstream, Thanks for checking back in. It’s been a while. I had a good time speaking with Dan and Jeff. I’ll have to keep checking Dan’s blog to see if he has updated. And I won’t be mentioning cupcakes anymore seeing what I wrote Friday. lol
