The Circle of Life In Pictures

by Jody on June 8, 2009

My cute little duck eggs. 11 of them. Which would have hatched this week.

Saturday morning I checked on my eggs and they were gone. Not an egg left. Not an eggshell to be found.

The film from our trail cam told the story.

Friday night horror

Did you get a good look at him? A fox. Roaming my city neighborhood feasting on duck eggs. There were 10 of these pictures right in a row.

After the very last fox picture, Mother duck returned.

And then *sniff* I saw this.

And *sniff* *sniff* this…

Sad is the circle of life but I guess a fox has to do what it has to do to survive.

So sorry for the loss of your baby ducks, glad to see it didn’t get mama as well..

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear this. Yes, the circle of life can be sad and frustrating sometimes…

Amazing what shows up in the middle of the night :-) I lost two work boots off my porch (left outside, were muddy) only to find a beagle hound came and got them, one the first night and came back a second for the other chew toy :-)

Very sad to see the ducklings didn’t make it.

But, I have to admit, it is very cool that your trail cam caught all the action. Amazing.

That is definitely a sad ending to the story, but unfortunately, it is the way life works.

Sad to see. No guarantee the fox needed it to survive either, they get up to all sorts of antics just for fun.

Talk about getting caught with egg on his face. Opps, I guess that wasn’t his face. I would have thought a coon or dog but not a fox. They are evidently pretty brazen to come right up to the house like that.

You might have to set out a live fox trap and see if he’ll return. They are harder on bird populations then any other preditor I believe. Cute but deadly.

Sad indeed – but such is the way of the wild critters. Amazing sequence of photos none the less.

And I was looking forward to baby duck pictures too… oh well, guess that’s nature for you.

So sad. I had been waiting for much better news. Glad the camera told the story of what happened.

Sorry to see that. Is predator hunting season over? Just kidding. I have the same problem when birds lay eggs in our birdhouses. However, snakes are the culprit. Here is a picture of one that was caught by my children while playing outside. Undoubtedly performing a scouting mission: http://caryb.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=47

Wow, what great camera footage. Silly ol’ fox. Poor mama duck! Daddy duck should go kick that fox’s @ss.

At least with the trail cam you didn’t have to wonder what took the eggs out of the nest…We have feral cats that prey on songbirds so I don’t put a feeder out.
