Unforgettable Hunting Memories

Jody asked if I had any funny hunting stories to tell and well, most of my funny stories are the ones the guys tell about me around the campfire, or the dinner table or while they are walking with me to my tree stand…

The first thing you need to understand about me is that I come from a non-hunting, non-fishing, non-camping family and was intrigued by this activity called “hunting” that my new husband and the rest of the men in his family were so obsessed with. So when we had been married all of two weeks and my husband asked if I would be interested in trying hunting I said the first thing that came to mind “sure!” Before I knew it I had my very own hunting boots, warm thermals, camo, a climbing tree stand and a bow.

The first thing I tried was hunting during Archery season for deer and turkey, on my first day out we were sitting in two trees about 20 yards apart on the edge of a field. Before long three big, ugly black
birds wandered within range of my stand – I glanced over at my hunter who was making all sorts of gestures at me, couldn’t understand what he wanted me to do, started to radio him then stopped when he shook his head “No” very firmly at me, shrugged my shoulders and kept on watching the birds. How was I supposed to know they were turkeys? I’d never seen a wild turkey before. Of course since that is the closest I’ve ever been to a live turkey since, I get to hear that story pretty
often.

But you can be sure that there are more stories now. There was the time we were waterfowl hunting some mud flats and I kept falling in the mud so I ended up just crawling around to set up all the decoys, then had to rinse off in the lake before I could get back in the boat to hunt. Do you know how hard it is to climb in and out of a boat in waist-deep water when you are wearing neoprene waders? Or the time I had a nice buck walk right through my shooting lane and couldn’t shoot
him because I forgot to take the gun off safety, then couldn’t shoot the does that walked past me later because it never occurred to me that I could stand up and turn sideways to shoot them since they were in the lane to the side of my two-person, buddy stand.

Staying home from the hunt would guarantee that I wouldn’t be the topic of conversation at Thanksgiving Dinner, but I really enjoy going so I guess I’ll be good-natured like the guys are and let them tell their stories about me. I just need to start telling all the ones I know about them!

You bet – tell the ones you know on them, absolutely! Good hunters have to be able to take it and dish it! Love the turkey story – I bet you hear that one every year on the night before opening day of turkey season, huh?

This is good Blessed…we don’t learn unless we get out there and try. I have had the safety on when waiting for the game to arrive. Then in the excitement of the moment, when I squeeze the trigger,
realizing my shotgun isn’t going off and whatever I’m after has taken OFF! ;)

I think all of us have similar stories. I told one not to long ago about freezing during the shot. We’ve all been there.

I’m sure you have plenty of stories from all the stories you hear from the “guys”.
