Welcoming All to The Outdoors

by Jody on February 13, 2009

OBS Challenge – Write a post about why the outdoors is for everyone:

This challenge is in response to an article written by a man that believes women aren’t suited for the outdoors and men aren’t accepting of women in their camp because their “women”.

After reading the article written by Mr. Orlet it’s obvious he clearly has no respect for women or the outdoors.  Sadly, his experiences seem to prove what he has to say as fact, yet I believe his issues run much deeper.

As anyone knows that reads my blog, I’m not a hunter.  I started my blog during hunting season as a way to express the humor I found with my hunting-husband’s ways.  As my blog grew so did the friendships I’ve made along the way.  Being a part of this online outdoor community I realized I’ve never seen a more passionate group who share a deep love and respect for the outdoors.

I’m proud to be a part of a group that defends this issue.  Many of the outdoor bloggers, both male and female, have taken a stand to respond to Mr. Orlet on his article, as well as I have.  They’ve come together to respond to what they believe – that the outdoors should be shared by all.

I’m not comfortable defending or debating issues regarding hunting because I’m not a hunter.  But I can say this: I’ve learned a lot over the past year and half that I’ve been blogging from some very well respected hunters, huntresses, anglers, those who enjoy the outdoors and writers of the outdoors.  A lot of what I believed has changed because of them, as well as from the passion my husband will forever hold.

As for Mr. Orlet and those that share his same opinion, it doesn’t matter what they believe.  What matters is what we believe, how we express what we believe, and that we stand up for what we believe in.  The outdoors is something to be enjoyed by all and it’s those that share that same belief that will always be held in high regard.

It is amazing to me that we still have “Good Old Boys”, that believe the wife should sit at home while they go out to hunt. Makes me sizzle…Dana at The Wildwoods Woman would be “Vexed”, truly if she were still around to voice her opinion.

Granted, I would need to get another method of being able to tolerate conditions here in Iowa come the deer hunting seasons to be out all day. I don’t have anyone to complain to since I hunt singly. The only ones that hear my story is hubby first of all and then anyone who catches my blogpost if I deem it good enough to pass along. ;)

Thats putting it simple enough that even I can understand. Positive expression should always overcome negitive ignorance.

This was wonderful to read a post from someone who is not a die hard hunter or fisher but respects and understands the passion that many of us feel for the outdoors.

Wonderful post Jody, and a great view from someone who is seeing things from a different angle. I’m so glad you took part in this challenge. I was hoping that you would.

Like Kristine said, it is nice to have your view from your position on this. It is also nice to have your open mindedness and your support for hunting and your husband passion. That says a lot about you and it also say’s a lot about Mr. Orlets, I’m on your side.

Wow – if it weren’t for my deceased husband and his love for the outdoors and what he taught me I could never have passed onto my son his true love of hunting and fishing! Guys, I drive a big 4WD F150 truck with a 6″ lift also! Little girls like big toys and we love hunting, fishing, camping and riding 4 wheelers just as much as any man. I respect everyones opinion, but will always choose to do what makes me happy and that is hunting, fishing, etc. :-)

Great post Jody.

I love how – even though you’re really not a hunter – you realize the passion that runs so deep for all of us who are.

Truth be told, though, you’re starting to come around. We all know how much you like fishing. Maybe hunting will come next?

Jody,
Wonderful outlook.

Always good to hear a non-hunters, or non-anything, support people who participate in any activity or belief.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
